What is Human Trafficking ?

Slavery is something that we all seem to be aware of, and are somewhat familiar with. When we think of slavery we recall to the term and meaning and trace it back to the history of slavery. We can trace it back to many years ago, and we are aware that it happened then but are we aware that it is happening now? It's modern day slavery and it is happening here, right now, just under our noses. Modern Slavery is Human Trafficking.

Modern Slavery

The new form of slavery is known as human trafficking. Human trafficking is something that we as Americans might be aware of? However when we think of human trafficking we tend to think of it as a cruel act that only happens overseas. We need to focus on the fact that it is happening here in the United States of America. This is the place that we honor and praise the rights of free speech and freedom rights. These rights are being ignored especially when it comes down to human trafficking. If we want to fix other countries problems and in specific the act of slavery, we need to fix what we have in our backyard first.

In the video “How to Combat Modern Slavery,” filmed February 2010,

the speaker, Kevin Bales identified modern slavery as

“This is about people who cannot walk away, people who are forced to work without pay, people who are operating 24/7 under a threat of violence and have no pay. It's real slavery in exactly the same way that slavery would be recognized throughout all of human history.”

In the Ted Talk “Photos that bear Witness to Modern Slavery “filmed in 2012, Lisa Kristine talks about how these people are being tricked into slavery.

“Many have been tricked by false promises of a good education, a better job, only to find that they're forced to work without pay under the threat of violence, and they cannot walk"

Human Trafficking can be defined many different way. Whether you decide to choose one definition over another is your choice. However that isn’t my biggest concern. The problem here is that Human trafficking is occurring here right now and we are doing close to nothing to stop this cruel act. We need to act fast and react to this problem that is happening all over including America.
